Groton Elementary School

Welcome to Groton Elementary School, home of the Groton Red Hawks and a school community where children are encouraged to learn, grow, explore, and discover their own unique pathways to success.

Located at 516 Elm Street in Groton, New York, Groton Elementary serves nearly 400 students from Pre-K through Grade 5. As the elementary school of the Groton Central School District, we proudly serve families from the Village and Town of Groton and the surrounding rural communities across portions of Tompkins, Cortland, and Cayuga counties.

Our Community

Groton is a close-knit rural community nestled among the rolling hills and valleys of Central New York. Located in northeastern Tompkins County between the Ithaca and Cortland areas, Groton offers the character and connections of a small community while providing access to the many educational, cultural, and recreational opportunities of the greater Finger Lakes region.

Agriculture, industry, education, and community have all played important roles in Groton's story. From generations of local farms and businesses to the community's long association with manufacturing and Smith Corona, Groton has a proud history of hard work, creativity, perseverance, and neighbors supporting one another.

Those same qualities continue to shape our school community today.

A Legacy of Learning

Education has been part of Groton's story for more than two centuries.

Groton's first schoolhouse was constructed in 1805, before the Town of Groton even carried its present name. The community later established Groton Academy in 1834, followed by generations of local schools serving children throughout the town and surrounding countryside.

The Groton Central School District was centralized in 1943, bringing together students and communities throughout the region under one school district.

Today, Groton Elementary School carries that long tradition of public education forward at our Elm Street campus. While classrooms, technology, and the ways children learn have changed considerably since Groton's first schoolhouse opened more than 200 years ago, the community's commitment to its children remains at the heart of our work.

Groton Elementary Today

At Groton Elementary, we believe the elementary years should provide children with both a strong academic foundation and opportunities to discover who they are as learners and people.

Our students build essential skills in literacy, mathematics, science, social studies, the arts, physical education, technology, and other areas while also learning to think critically, collaborate, communicate, solve problems, and create.

Learning extends beyond the traditional classroom through experiences such as our STEAM Learning Center, hands-on projects, student leadership opportunities, clubs, performances, family events, enrichment programming, and community partnerships.

Our youngest learners begin their journey through our Pre-K programs, and throughout the elementary years our teachers and staff work together to provide developmentally appropriate instruction, intervention, enrichment, and support so that each child can continue to grow.
