The Groton Jr-Sr High school serves approximately 395 students in grades 6-12. This public school is the only junior/senior high school in the Groton Central School District. The population is made up students living in the Village and Town of Groton, Tompkins County and extending into areas of Cortland and Cayuga Counties.
The Groton Jr-Sr High is home to several different academic and extracurricuar programs for students. Presently, there are over 15 clubs and 11 different sports teams. In addition, the school is a desginated Early College High School (ECHS), where students in grades 9-12 are afforded the opportunity to take dual enrollment courses.
The Groton Jr-Sr High School is proud of its STEAM learning center, where students are able to take a three-period block of classes in the following areas of study: Agriculture, Building Trades, Communications & Graphic Design, and Health Sciences. Focused on a Project-Based Learning approach to instruction, the STEAM programs provide core content instruction to students, who then demonstrate proficiency in those skills through application to authentic learning opportunities/projects. In addition, students are exposed to career readiness skills through weekly instruction in that area. Within each STEAM cluster, students are exposed to a wide variety of careers available to them. The goal of the program is not to narrowly "channel" students towards a single career, but instead, allow for a broad exploration of the various career opportunities within a given field of study. Many of the courses are also dual enrollment classes for those students who wish to earn college credit while participating in STEAM.
In addition, the school is home to an outstanding and extremly active Career Center that provides several College and Career Readiness Workshops throughout the year, hosts a student ambassador program to build leadership skills, runs the Summer Career Academies that allow students to get hands-on, authentic exposure to a wide variety of careers available within a given field, and works with the STEAM program to build connections between school and community for real-life projects for our students.
