Students attended an in-house mini health sciences career fair and also had the opportunity to attend Ithaca College's Health Careers Expo.

High School Jobs Fair
STEAM students attended the High School Jobs Opportunities Fair at SUNY Cortland on March 14th. There were over 50 local businesses for students to connect with and even apply to entry level or summer job openings. Thank you to Amy Buggs at Cortland Workforce Development for organizing such a great event that allowed students to network with adults and gain more awareness of the opportunities within their own backyard!

Money $marts Expo
Students got a reality check, and a firsthand lesson in personal finance at the “Money $marts Expo last week. “Money $marts” is an interactive, hands-on experience in adulting as students learn how to manage their money while making important life decisions.
Students entered the event with a monthly take-home pay (based on a career they chose) and a checkbook register. They navigated various stations that simulated real-life expenses: housing, groceries, transportation, student loans, savings, and more.
Students had to make choices about which option to purchase: buying used or new, shopping at ALDI or Wegmans, getting the unlimited streaming service or basic coverage. Taking a spin at the "Wheel-of-Life" taught them about life’s unexpected such as medical bills, car or home repairs, and pet care. Students were amazed at how quickly their money went!
A HUGE thank you to Groton Bank, Dryden Bank, Tompkins Community Bank, Visions Federal Credit Union, Dryden Realty (Kayla Lane), TC3 (Jim Janke), and the United Way (Rebekah Hinton) for volunteering to run the stations! An extra "thank you" to Groton Bank for providing some fun giveaways and to VFCU for helping with all the event materials! Thank you to the Cortland and Lansing business classes for joining us as well.
Speed Reading
Student attended a two-day workshop on Speed Reading & Memory. They learned strategies to increase their reading speed, comprehension, and retention. Students worked on speed reading drills that trained their eyes to see words faster using their fingers to guide them through various articles. They learned when to slow down and speed up and how to INSPECT texts for better comprehension. Lastly, they practiced RAVE (repetition, association, visualization, and exaggeration) techniques to improve their retention of information.
