Groton Elementary School

March 19, 2024 Dear Groton Central School District Community, This correspondence is being sent in response to recent inquiries regarding the school district’s plans for April 8, 2024, the date of the solar eclipse. Initially the district was collaborating with all component districts in the TST-BOCES who had made the decision in early December to continue to be open on that day. However, at the beginning of March, many of the component districts in our BOCES as well as schools in Cortland County, Onondaga County and across Central New York made the decision to either close or go to a half day instruction on April 8, 2024. The District does have flexibility with “give back days” this year due to a relatively mild winter. As such, we will be modifying the school calendar to make the scheduled “give back day” of Friday, March 29th a full day of instruction, and move that “give back day” to Monday, April 8th, 2024. In other words, students have school on March 29th, but school will be closed on April 8th, 2024. The District has ordered glasses for viewing the eclipse for all students. If they have arrived by 29th, we will distribute them before the kids head home. If they have not, we will have them available on Monday, April 8th, from 8am to 11:30am for pick up. Groton Junior High Drama Club Presents: Silver's Secret

As some of you may already be aware, Central New York is experiencing an unexpected shortage of the half pint milk paper cartons from our suppliers. It is anticipated this shortage will continue into January of 2024. Here at Groton, we understand the importance of our students having access to the nutritional value of a serving of milk at breakfast and at lunch. As such our plan is to continue to serve milk, using serving products we have available. For both the elementary and Jr-Sr High, students will receive serving size milk from cooler dispensers in the cafeteria using 8 ounce cups. Students will have a choice of 1% white milk at breakfast and 1% white milk or low-fat chocolate milk at lunch.

Groton Elementary School is kicking off the Positivity Project this school year! Each week teachers and staff, including our entire kitchen and daytime custodial staff, will be decked out in their blue P2 shirts to signify kicking off a new word of the week. Students across the building will be diving into 24 different character strengths, such as kindness, honesty, integrity, other people mindset, and teamwork, learning what those strengths mean and how to be their best possible selves for their own personal development as well as for their peers. Students will have the opportunity to earn character cash when they demonstrate these traits, spending it at the school store on various items. We are excited to have our preschoolers all the way up through our 5th graders speaking the same positive language!
